Which is Preppier?

Posted on: Friday, October 1, 2010

A few of us have been reading the book "True Prep" (follow-up to The Official Preppy Handbook) which has provided endless fodder for email chains and constant banter concerning all things prep.
Recently the question was posed: Which is preppier, duck boots or loafers?
Here are two of the responses:

I'm going to have to go with Duck boots UNLESS your loafers are vintage Gucci and your wearing them with total disregard (such as to a horse race, or in the rain).
I think it goes without saying that said loafers will be worn sans socks.

I will have to
second the duck boots as it harkens back to the days of preppy-past meets present. Much like the matching grandmother-mother-daughter lilly dresses, duck boots are acceptable for all ages and help you attain the fabled fountain of youth; which we all know is Preppy rule #17: You do not age as long as you wear clothes which are also still sold in the Children's section.

So what do you t hink? Duck boots, or loafers?

Well, if the loafers have been hand crafted in Maine or Belgium... and they were NOT purchased at a department store (faux Prippy is everywhere!), than I believe they tie the iconic duck boot.

That being said, modern day interpretations of the duck boot (a la Tory, and Michael Kors) are not nearly as preppy as the Bean Boot, and therefore should not be counted as more preppy than the loafer... even if they are super cute!

I could debate such things endlessly.

I would have to say loafers, and here is why. Duck boots can be considered preppy, but on occasion I'll see rednecks wearing them. I never see rednecks wearing loafers. -GL
